Teen Program Coordinator

Position Overview:

The Teen Program Coordinator will support the coordination of after-school and summertime learning, recreational and life skills building activities designed for kids aged 11-18 in order to empower youth to explore their talents and find their voice. This position will also lead the Job Club Program, including the Lemonade Stand, during the Spring and Summer. The Coordinator must be empathetic, self-motivated and eager to be a part of a collaborative team that is committed to the health and wellbeing of all youth and families. They should also demonstrate a commitment to principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. This is a full time 35 hours/week position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Support program managers in planning, organizing and leading daily activities for teens that encourage personal growth and development, academic achievement, and interest in recreation.

  • Provide a listening ear, encouraging voice, and general support to teens on a daily basis, including assistance with projects and homework and attendance at individual youth activities.

  • Educate teens in various life skills through activities such as money management, cooking/food skills, digital savviness, time management, etc.

  • Provide transportation to/from offsite activities and/or rides home for teens after program hours using either a personal vehicle or company provided transportation.

  • Purchase instructional materials and teaching aids, including developmentally-appropriate books and games as well as any other necessary supplies in accordance with the Teen Program annual budget.

  • Maintain awareness of children’s participation and whereabouts.

  • Attend health and safety matters, including reporting and record keeping.

  • Educating teens about professional skills; such as the importance of showing up on time, communicating clearly and effectively, taking direction from others, etc.

  • Ability to deal with conflict, interact with challenging situations with children and families.

  • Support youth to engage in extracurricular activities outside of the Center

  • Support the operation of middle and high school activities as needed.

General oversight and management of the Job Club program, a jobs and life skills program for middle school youth, that includes running our lemonade stand “business” during summer months:

  • Enroll 6th and 7th grade students in “Job Club” by walking them through how the program works, working with youth to ensure they are prepared and explaining expectations of the program.

  • Run weekly training sessions in late winter and spring with 6th and 7th grade students to teach them job related skills such as food safety, food preparation, customer service, financial literacy, day to day operations of running a lemonade stand, and other important life and job skills. 

  • Access efficacy of program and work towards enhancing and expanding this program

  • Find new and creative ways to engage students and expand their learning through this program.

  • Serve as main point of contact with Echo Leahy Center to coordinate operation of lemonade stand

  • Partner with outside organizations on prospective events and partnership opportunities

  • Day to day oversight and management of the lemonade stand:

    • Create and manage daily youth schedules and shifts 

    • Run weekly “staff meetings” with lemonade stand students

    • Ensure adequate supplies for the lemonade stand, including review of inventory and ordering of supplies.

    • Manage, track, and deposit daily revenue from lemonade stand

    • Manage high school lemonade managers

Other Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support Program Managers and Program Staff with behavior management.

  • General “housekeeping” matters such as food preparation, program room clean up, and light facilities maintenance.

  • Coordinate activities with other KSC programs (early childhood education, K-5,family support, and mentoring) as well as other agencies and facilities, as needed.

 Relationships & Roles:

  • Reports to Teen Program Director

  • Works closely with Program Managers to plan and implement activities and programs for teens

  • Interacts with teens, families, program managers, teen program staff, volunteers, and community organizations and businesses that support youth activities.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Must pass a criminal background check through the VT Child Care Development Division  and complete required trainings (CPR/First Aid Training & Mandated Reporter)

  • Must have a valid driver's license and pass a motor vehicle report

  • High School diploma or equivalent; College credits in the field of Education preferred but not required

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working with teens / youth and planning activities. 

  • Experience working with low-income youth and families and immigrant and refugee communities is required.

  • Food service, barista, hospitality or other customer service experience preferred but not required.

  • Must have workplace basic literacy skills including being able to read and write at an 8th grade level, keep legible records

  • Basic math skills in order to open/close lemonade stand and reconcile point of sale system, cash register, and reports

  • Must have good time management and organizational skills

Physical Requirements & Conditions of Work:

Work is conducted inside and outside during all seasons. Must be able to be physically active, participate in gross motor games, and walk distances to neighborhood sites. Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, twisting, stooping, crouching, reaching. Occasional safe lifting or moving of lemonade cart, materials or furniture, weighing up to 50 pounds.

Employment Details:

Classification: Full-Time hourly, Non-Exempt
Location: This is an on-site position 
Pay: $20-23 per hour 
Hours: 35 hours/week within the hours of 10am-6:30pm [may vary as needed]
