Book Buddy Program
“Even though I was there to help my Book Buddy, I often felt like she helped me just as much. This program creates meaningful connections that go beyond academics."
— Evey, Book Buddy Volunteer
Book Buddies are essential in helping our students learn and master their reading skills!
Literacy is a critical life skill. Research shows that children who are not able to read proficiently by 3rd grade are at much greater risk of dropping out of school. Unfortunately, we continue to see the impacts of the pandemic on reading levels in our kindergarten through 5th grade students. Many are behind in there reading, some at an emergency-level status. King Street Center’s Book Buddy Program matches volunteers ages 16 and older with a kindergarten through 5th grade student to read and play educational games with each week. These amazing volunteers bring the FUN to learning and ensure kids are supporting in meeting their academic goals throughout the year.
